Emma van der Leest
The Microbial Vending Machine
(The Netherlands, 2019)
Augmented Reality
Locations: virtual environment (part of AR city tour)
Bio-designer Emma van der Leest is inspired by micro-organisms and uses them as the basis for her artworks, allowing for the discovery of new properties by making microbes more accessible. By making microbes more accessible to a wider public we are able to discover its properties and apply them in a wide variety of products (from shoes to shelter).
We control organisms for our very survival, yet now we enact a more total control, engineering the world on a microbial level. To tell the compelling story of a new bio-revolution, The Microbial Vending Machine contains collectible organisms that can produce food, medicine, materials and cosmetics. Fueled by breakthroughs in biological science and the confluence of advances in data and analytics, what recently might have read like a page from a science fiction book is becoming a reality – and faster than you might think.
You can view this work inside our virtual environment via the Augmented Reality app as well as on the ‘s-Hertogenbosch AR City Tour.
