Neil Harbisson
Sound Palette
(Spain, 2020)
Augmented Reality
Location: virtual environment (part of AR city tour)
Cyborg artist Neil Harbisson has a custom implant enabling him to hear colors, but as a secondary effect, he also experiences sounds as color. Each color has its own light frequency. So if you can hear the light frequency of red for example, you would hear a specific note. The sound palette is a way of visualizing the color of each note and the note of each color. It also allows you to see the colour of specific chords so if you unite the color of C, the color of E and the color of G, you’ll get a C major chord. His implant allows the artist to use color to visualize music and sound. Instead of reading a traditional score he can actually create music by looking at different colors. With the AR (augmented reality) installation Neil Harbisson creates for (IM)POSSIBLE BODIES, viewers can step into Neil’s universe and experience what it’s like to compose or interpret music through cyborg senses.
